Get to know De Tomasos for sale at Pedal to the Metal. Argentine-born Alejandro de Tomaso founded the company in Modena in 1959, building racing cars before turning to road cars with the Vallelunga of 1963. The Giugiaro-designed Mangusta followed in 1967, and the Pantera, styled by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia, ran from 1971 to 1993. Each paired Italian design with a mid-mounted Ford V8 and a ZF gearbox. De Tomaso also owned Maserati from 1976 to 1993, and after the company’s liquidation in 2004 the name returned with the P72 in 2019.
If your ideal De Tomaso isn’t in our current inventory, we can help you find it. PTTM sources high-quality classic and collector cars, with worldwide delivery available.
Choose by era, rarity and use. The Mangusta of 1967–1971 is the earlier and rarer mid-engined car, with a steel backbone chassis and gullwing-style engine covers. The De Tomaso Pantera is the best known, built from 1971 to 1993 in versions from the early Ford-era cars to the GT5-S and the Si, and it is the easier car to find, own and maintain.
De Tomaso also built front-engined Ford V8 grand tourers, the Deauville saloon and the Longchamp coupé, as well as the later Guarà.
The Mangusta and Pantera both use a mid-mounted Ford V8 with a five-speed ZF transaxle. Most Mangustas have the 302, while early European cars used the 289. The Pantera began with the 351 Cleveland, later used the 351 Windsor and finished with a fuel-injected 302 in the Si. Because the engines are Ford-based, mechanical parts are widely available, while the bodywork, chassis and trim are specific to De Tomaso and need specialist knowledge.
Start with identity, because many Panteras have been given later flares and details, and Mangustas were built in small numbers. Check that the chassis number, engine and specification match the car’s documentation. Then inspect the steel structure carefully for rust and previous repairs, as early De Tomasos had limited rust protection, and check cooling, electrics and suspension, which have often been updated over the years.
On restomod and pro-touring cars, judge the quality of the components and workmanship. PTTM can share the information available on a car and discuss any further inspection.
Model, version and originality set the starting point. A Mangusta, of which 401 were built, or a rare later Pantera such as the GT5-S or Si sits in a different market from a modified early Pantera. Within any car, value reflects originality, documentation, the quality of structural repairs and restoration, factory specification, condition, colour and mileage.
Unrestored survivors, restored cars and professionally built restomods are each valued on different terms. Compare the whole car and its records alongside the price, and PTTM can help you define a realistic search.
Registration documents with a chassis number matching the car are the foundation. Original sales documents, service records and the owner’s manual add weight where they survive. For a Pantera, the Pantera Owners Club of America is a useful reference, including its research into chassis numbers. Restoration invoices and photographs show what has been done since. Imported cars should carry their import papers, and PTTM’s Registration Service can guide European registration.
Yes, PTTM can assess your current car and discuss a trade-in towards a De Tomaso purchase. Send us its make, model, year, mileage, photographs and available history, along with details of the car you are interested in. Trade-ins are not automatic: each proposal is considered individually, based on condition, documentation and market demand.
Possible structures include equal-value exchanges and trades with a cash adjustment on either side, agreed transparently in advance.
De Tomaso combined Italian design, from Giugiaro, Tjaarda and later Gandini, with American V8 power. Ford took a majority stake in 1971 and sold the Pantera in the United States through Lincoln-Mercury dealers, which gives the car a strong following on both sides of the Atlantic. The Mangusta was built in only 401 examples, around 150 of them for Europe. Individual cars stand out through originality, documentation, rare specifications and condition, and a well-sorted driver can be as rewarding as a concours restoration.
It depends on how you plan to use the car. The Mangusta and Pantera are low, mid-engined two-seaters that suit fast road driving and events, and the Pantera has a reputation as the more usable of the two. The Longchamp and Deauville are front-engined grand tourers for longer journeys. An original or carefully restored car suits buyers who value authenticity, while updates to cooling, brakes and suspension make regular use easier. PTTM offers restorations and custom builds.
Yes. Our Personalized Car Search service can look beyond our current inventory. Tell us your preferred model, version and year, whether original or modified, and colour, condition and budget.
We identify suitable cars and help assess their condition, history and authenticity. Mangustas, early Panteras, European GTS cars, the GT5-S and the Pantera Si can take longer to find, and we will give you an honest expectation of timing. Search terms are agreed before we begin, and you are never obliged to proceed with a car we present.
Yes. PTTM works with buyers across Europe and overseas and can coordinate transport to your country. Within Europe, cars travel by road with our own trailers or trusted partners. Intercontinental deliveries normally go by sea freight, and air freight is available on request. We confirm the transport method, insurance, costs and estimated timing for your destination before you commit. Import requirements vary by country, so share your destination when enquiring and we can explain the options.
We’re happy to discuss your plans and advise on the right next steps. Whether you’re considering a purchase, planning a restoration or build, or exploring options for selling or registration.
