Browse AMC cars for sale at Pedal to the Metal. American Motors Corporation was formed on 1 May 1954 through the merger of Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson, and under George Romney it built its success on the compact Rambler. In the late 1960s AMC moved into performance cars with the Javelin pony car, the two-seat AMX, the 1969 SC/Rambler built with Hurst and the 1970 Rebel Machine, using its own 290 to 401 cubic-inch V8s. Its Javelins won the Trans-Am championship in 1971 and 1972, and AMC remained independent until Chrysler acquired it in 1987.
If your ideal AMC isn’t in our current inventory, we can help you find it. PTTM sources high-quality classic and collector cars, with worldwide delivery available.
Choose by era and character. The Javelin, built from 1968 to 1974, is AMC’s four-seat pony car, restyled for 1971 with a longer wheelbase and the 401 V8. The AMX was a two-seat coupé from mid-1968 to 1970 and then the Javelin’s top performance version from 1971 to 1974. The SC/Rambler and the Rebel Machine are AMC’s limited muscle cars of 1969 and 1970.
For most buyers, the key choice is between a two-seat AMX, a 1968–1970 Javelin and the restyled 1971–1974 Javelin or Javelin AMX, with the engine making the biggest difference to performance and value.
AMC built its own V8s. The 290 and 343 of 1968–1969 were replaced by the 304 and 360 for 1970, the 390 arrived in mid-1968 as part of the Go Package, and the 401 became the top engine for 1971. A 390 or 401 gives the most torque, while a 304 or 360 offers a balance of performance and economy. Manual and automatic gearboxes were offered, and buyers looking for a performance car often prefer a four-speed manual with a 390 or 401.
Start with identity, because AMX, Go Package, SC/Rambler and Rebel Machine details can be added to lesser cars. Check that the VIN, body tag and engine match the car and its documentation. Then inspect the unibody structure, floors, rear quarters, boot floor and lower panels for rust and previous repairs. Because AMC was smaller than its Detroit rivals, check the availability of model-specific trim and parts before buying a car that needs restoration.
On restomod and pro-touring cars, judge the quality of the components and workmanship. PTTM can share the information available on a car and discuss any further inspection.
Model, engine and originality set the starting point. A two-seat AMX, particularly with the 390, an SC/Rambler, a Rebel Machine or a 401-engined Javelin AMX sits in a different market from a six-cylinder compact. Rare equipment such as the Go Package or the Pierre Cardin interior of 1972 and 1973 adds interest. Within any specification, value reflects originality, documentation, condition, factory options and colour.
Unrestored survivors, restored cars and professionally built pro-touring cars and restomods are each valued on different terms. Compare the whole car and its records alongside the price, and PTTM can help you define a realistic search.
Registration or title documents with a VIN matching the car are the foundation. Original paperwork such as a window sticker, dealer invoice or build documentation adds weight where it survives, especially on an AMX, SC/Rambler or Rebel Machine. Records from AMC owner clubs and specialists can help confirm a car’s specification. Restoration invoices and photographs show what has been done since. Imported cars should carry their import papers, and PTTM’s Registration Service can guide European registration.
Yes, PTTM can assess your current car and discuss a trade-in towards an AMC purchase. Send us its make, model, year, mileage, photographs and available history, along with details of the car you are interested in. Trade-ins are not automatic: each proposal is considered individually, based on condition, documentation and market demand.
Possible structures include equal-value exchanges and trades with a cash adjustment on either side, agreed transparently in advance.
AMC took on much larger rivals with distinctive cars and a strong racing record. In January 1968, Craig Breedlove and his team set 106 world speed and endurance records in two AMXs, and only 19,134 two-seat AMXs were built. The Javelin won the Trans-Am championship in 1971, 1972 and 1976, with Penske Racing and Mark Donohue among its drivers. Because AMC cars were built in smaller numbers, many are rarely seen today. A well-sorted driver can be as rewarding as a concours restoration.
It depends on how you plan to use the car. A Javelin offers four seats and pony-car proportions, while the two-seat AMX is shorter and sportier. A 304 or 360 car suits relaxed touring, and a 390 or 401 car delivers more performance. An original or factory-correct restored AMC suits buyers who value authenticity, while a restomod adds modern brakes, suspension and comfort. PTTM offers both, from factory-correct restorations to custom restomod and pro-touring builds.
Yes. Our Personalized Car Search service can look beyond our current inventory. Tell us your preferred model and year, engine and transmission, whether original or modified, and colour, condition and budget.
We identify suitable cars and help assess their condition, history and authenticity. Two-seat AMXs, SC/Ramblers, Rebel Machines, 401-engined Javelin AMXs and four-speed cars can take longer to find, and we will give you an honest expectation of timing. Search terms are agreed before we begin, and you are never obliged to proceed with a car we present.
Yes. PTTM works with buyers across Europe and overseas and can coordinate transport to your country. Within Europe, cars travel by road with our own trailers or trusted partners. Intercontinental deliveries normally go by sea freight, and air freight is available on request. We confirm the transport method, insurance, costs and estimated timing for your destination before you commit. Import requirements vary by country, so share your destination when enquiring and we can explain the options.
We’re happy to discuss your plans and advise on the right next steps. Whether you’re considering a purchase, planning a restoration or build, or exploring options for selling or registration.
