Shelby Daytona For Sale

Discover Shelby Daytonas for sale at Pedal to the Metal. The Shelby Daytona, often called the Cobra Daytona Coupe, is a closed racing coupé built on the Cobra chassis with a 289 Ford V8 and an aerodynamic body designed by Pete Brock. Only six original cars were built in 1964 and 1965. The prototype was completed at Shelby’s shop in Venice, California, and the other five were bodied by Carrozzeria Gransport in Modena. The Daytona won the GT class at Le Mans in 1964 and gave Shelby the 1965 International Championship for GT Manufacturers. Shelby-licensed continuation coupés have followed since.

If your ideal Shelby isn’t in our current inventory, we can help you find it. PTTM sources high-quality classic and collector cars, with worldwide delivery available.

Frequently Asked Questions:

In practice the choice is between continuation coupés, because the six original Daytonas are historic racing cars with individual, well-known histories. Shelby-licensed continuation cars reproduce the original shape on a Cobra-type chassis, and some are offered with an aluminium body built to the original measurements or a fibreglass body. Choose by body material, engine, gearbox and build quality, and by how faithful to the 1964–1965 specification you want the car to be.

An original Daytona is one of six cars built in 1964 and 1965, with CSX chassis numbers from the Cobra range, such as CSX2287, the prototype, and CSX2299, the 1964 Le Mans class winner. Continuation cars are later coupés licensed by Shelby, including Shelby’s CSX9000 series and its 50th anniversary series of 50 cars announced in 2015, which were sold as rolling chassis to be completed by the buyer or a dealer.

Coupés built by other companies without a Shelby licence are replicas and are listed under their own make.

Start with identity. For a continuation car, check its Shelby documentation, its serial number and who built the rolling chassis. Because many continuation cars were completed by their owners or dealers, find out who fitted the engine, gearbox, axle, wiring and cooling, and to what standard. Then inspect the chassis, suspension, brakes and body. On an aluminium body, check panel fit and repairs, and on a fibreglass body, look for cracks.

On restomod and pro-touring cars, judge the quality of the components and workmanship. PTTM can share the information available on a car and discuss any further inspection.

Authenticity sets the starting point. An original Daytona is a unique historic racing car in a market of its own. Among continuation cars, the series, the body material, the engine and gearbox, the quality of the build and the documentation matter most, followed by mileage, condition and colour. A car completed by a recognised builder with full records will usually be valued differently from an owner-finished car with little paperwork.

Unrestored survivors, restored cars and professionally built restomods are each valued on different terms. Compare the whole car and its records alongside the price, and PTTM can help you define a realistic search.

Registration or title documents with a chassis number matching the car are the foundation. A continuation Daytona should come with its Shelby documentation and serial number, the builder’s paperwork, and records of who completed the car and which engine, gearbox and axle were fitted. Photographs of the build and service invoices add weight. Imported cars should carry their import papers, and PTTM’s Registration Service can guide inspection and European registration.

Yes, PTTM can assess your current car and discuss a trade-in towards a Shelby purchase. Send us its make, model, year, mileage, photographs and available history, along with details of the car you are interested in. Trade-ins are not automatic: each proposal is considered individually, based on condition, documentation and market demand.

Possible structures include equal-value exchanges and trades with a cash adjustment on either side, agreed transparently in advance.

The Daytona has a strong international racing record. It took GT class wins at Sebring in 1964 and 1965, at Daytona in 1965 and at Le Mans in 1964, where Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant finished fourth overall in CSX2299. That car was timed at more than 196 mph on the Mulsanne Straight. In 1965 Shelby became the first American constructor to win the International Championship for GT Manufacturers. It shares its chassis with the Shelby Cobra, and a well-sorted continuation car can be as rewarding to own as a concours car.

It depends on how you plan to use the car. A continuation Daytona is a closed two-seater with a racing shape, so it suits events, track days and longer drives in better weather than an open Cobra allows. A car built closely to the 1964–1965 specification suits buyers who value authenticity, while modern brakes, cooling and comfort features make regular use easier. PTTM offers factory-correct restorations and custom restomod and pro-touring builds. Tell your sales advisor how and how often you plan to drive.

Yes. Our Personalized Car Search service can look beyond our current inventory. Tell us your preferred series, body material, engine and gearbox, colour, condition and budget.

We identify suitable cars and help assess their condition, history and authenticity. Aluminium-bodied continuation cars, cars from specific series and professionally completed cars with full records can take longer to find, and we will give you an honest expectation of timing. Search terms are agreed before we begin, and you are never obliged to proceed with a car we present.

Yes. PTTM works with buyers across Europe and overseas and can coordinate transport to your country. Within Europe, cars travel by road with our own trailers or trusted partners. Intercontinental deliveries normally go by sea freight, and air freight is available on request. We confirm the transport method, insurance, costs and estimated timing for your destination before you commit. Import requirements vary by country, so share your destination when enquiring and we can explain the options.
