Pontiac Firebird Trans Am For Sale

Scroll through Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams for sale at Pedal to the Metal. The Trans Am began in 1969 as a handling and appearance package on the F-body Firebird, shared with the Chevrolet Camaro, and only 697 were built that year. The 1970½–1981 second generation brought the Ram Air IV, the 455 HO, the Super Duty 455 and, from 1973, the optional hood bird decal. The 1982–1992 third generation was lighter, with pop-up headlamps, and included the GTA and the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. The 1993–2002 fourth generation used the LT1 and LS1 V8s, and production ended in 2002.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Choose by era and character. The 1969 car is the rare original. The 1970½–1981 cars offer the Ram Air IV for 1970, the 455 HO for 1971–1972 and the Super Duty 455 for 1973–1974, followed by the Special Edition years, the 1979 peak and the turbocharged 4.9 of 1980–1981.

The 1982–1992 cars are about 500 lb lighter and include the GTA and the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. The 1993–2002 cars use the LT1, then from 1998 the LS1, with the WS6 package returning in 1996. Since 2012, licensed Trans Am builds based on new Camaros have also been made by Trans Am Depot.

The key engines mark the car’s eras. The Ram Air IV was exclusive to the 1970 Trans Am, the 455 HO was standard for 1971–1972, and the Super Duty 455 was offered for 1973–1974. The 1989 Turbo Trans Am used a turbocharged 3.8 V6 from the Buick GNX.

Special editions include the black and gold 1976 50th anniversary car, the 1977 Special Edition seen in Smokey and the Bandit, the 1979 10th Anniversary, the 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo, the 1994 25th and 1999 30th anniversary cars, and the yellow 2002 collector’s edition.

Start with identity, because Ram Air, Super Duty, Special Edition and Turbo Trans Am clones exist. Check that the VIN, engine codes and equipment match the car and its documentation, and for classic cars, PHS Automotive Services can supply factory billing records. On anniversary and special editions, confirm the edition through the paperwork rather than the paint and decals. Then inspect the floors, rear quarters, lower panels and subframe for rust and previous repairs.

On restomod and pro-touring cars, judge the quality of the components and workmanship. PTTM can share the information available on a car and discuss any further inspection.

Year, engine and edition set the starting point. A 1969 car, a Ram Air IV, a 455 HO, a Super Duty 455, a documented Special Edition, a 10th Anniversary, a 1989 Turbo Trans Am or a low-mileage WS6 sits in a very different market from a later car with a smaller engine. Within any specification, value reflects originality and matching drivetrain components, documentation and condition, factory options and colour, and on later cars, mileage.

Unrestored survivors, restored cars and professionally built pro-touring cars and restomods are each valued on different terms. Compare the whole car and its records alongside the price, and PTTM can help you define a realistic search.

Registration or title documents with a VIN matching the car are the foundation. For many classic Pontiacs, PHS Automotive Services, the successor to Pontiac Historic Services, can supply car-specific records such as dealer order forms and factory billing histories. Original paperwork such as a window sticker, build sheet or dealer invoice adds weight where it survives. Restoration invoices and photographs show what has been done since. Imported cars should carry their import papers, and PTTM’s Registration Service can guide European registration.

Yes, PTTM can assess your current car and discuss a trade-in towards a Pontiac purchase. Send us its make, model, year, mileage, photographs and available history, along with details of the car you are interested in. Trade-ins are not automatic: each proposal is considered individually, based on condition, documentation and market demand.

Possible structures include equal-value exchanges and trades with a cash adjustment on either side, agreed transparently in advance.

The Trans Am combines rarity, performance and screen history. Only 697 were built for 1969, including eight convertibles, and GM paid the SCCA $5 per car to use the Trans Am name. In 1973, 252 Trans Ams received the Super Duty 455. The 1977 Special Edition became famous through Smokey and the Bandit, 1979 sales reached 116,535, and a black 1982 Trans Am became KITT in Knight Rider. Individual cars stand out through originality, documentation, rare options and condition, and a well-sorted driver can be as rewarding as a concours restoration.

It depends on how you plan to use the car. A 1969–1981 car with a big Pontiac V8 offers classic muscle-car character, while the lighter 1982–1992 cars feel more modern. The 1993–2002 LT1 and LS1 cars combine strong performance with everyday usability. An original or factory-correct restored Trans Am suits buyers who value authenticity, while a restomod adds modern brakes, suspension and comfort for regular use. PTTM offers both, from factory-correct restorations to custom restomod and pro-touring builds. Tell your sales advisor how and how often you plan to drive.

Yes. Our Personalized Car Search service can look beyond our current inventory. Tell us your preferred generation and year, engine and edition, whether original or modified, and colour, condition and budget.

We identify suitable cars and help assess their condition, history and authenticity. 1969 cars, Ram Air IV and Super Duty 455 cars, documented Special Editions, Turbo Trans Ams and low-mileage collector’s editions can take longer to find, and we will give you an honest expectation of timing. Search terms are agreed before we begin, and you are never obliged to proceed with a car we present.

Yes. PTTM works with buyers across Europe and overseas and can coordinate transport to your country. Within Europe, cars travel by road with our own trailers or trusted partners. Intercontinental deliveries normally go by sea freight, and air freight is available on request. We confirm the transport method, insurance, costs and estimated timing for your destination before you commit. Import requirements vary by country, so share your destination when enquiring and we can explain the options.
