Choose from Pilgrim Cobras for sale at Pedal to the Metal. The Pilgrim Cobra, officially the Pilgrim Sumo, is a replica of the 427 Cobra built by Pilgrim, a British maker based near Henfield in West Sussex that has built cars since the 1960s. Design work began in 1980, and production started in 1985. Early cars used Ford Cortina parts on a ladder-frame chassis with a fibreglass inner tub and body. Later versions moved to a steel-frame chassis with V6 and V8 options, and current cars use Ford Sierra or Granada components. Pilgrim has offered the Sumo both as a kit and factory-built, and it is still in production.
If your ideal Pilgrim isn’t in our current inventory, we can help you find it. PTTM sources high-quality classic and collector cars, with worldwide delivery available.
Choose by version, build and drivetrain. Pilgrim has produced the Sumo in Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 form, moving from Cortina-based cars on a ladder frame to steel-frame cars with a stiffened, semi-monocoque structure and Sierra or Granada parts. The biggest differences between individual cars, however, come from who built them and what they were fitted with.
Factory-built cars and professionally finished kits usually offer more consistent quality than home-built cars. Engines range from V6s to large V8s, so the choice also depends on how much performance you want.
A Pilgrim Sumo is a replica of the 427 Cobra, designed and built by Pilgrim in Britain. It is often listed as a Pilgrim Cobra or a Cobra replica, but it is not a Shelby or AC product and is not a Shelby-licensed continuation car. Original Cobras were built from 1962 to 1967 with an AC-built body and chassis and a Ford V8, and you can find them on our Shelby Cobra page. A Pilgrim offers the shape and character of a 427 Cobra on its own chassis and components.
Start with who built the car, from which parts and how it is registered. Registration documents may show the date of first registration or the donor vehicle rather than the year the car was completed, so check that the chassis number, documents and description match. Then inspect the chassis welds and mounts, the fibreglass body for cracks and repairs, the suspension, steering, brakes, wiring, fuel system and cooling, and how well the drivetrain suits the axle.
On restomod and pro-touring cars, judge the quality of the components and workmanship. PTTM can share the information available on a car and discuss any further inspection.
Build quality and specification set the starting point. A factory-built or professionally finished car with a well-matched V8 drivetrain, uprated brakes and full records sits in a different market from a home-built car with little documentation. Registration, chassis and body condition, finish and mileage all matter. A Pilgrim is valued as a replica, so it should be compared with other well-built replicas rather than with original Cobras.
Original cars, restored cars and professionally built replicas and restomods are each valued on different terms. Compare the whole car and its records alongside the price, and PTTM can help you define a realistic search.
Registration documents that match the car’s chassis number are the foundation. A Pilgrim should also come with records of who built it, invoices for the kit or factory build, details of the donor parts, engine, gearbox and axle, and photographs of the build. Any inspection or approval documents from its road registration add weight, as do service records. Imported cars should carry their import papers, and PTTM’s Registration Service can guide inspection and European registration.
Yes, PTTM can assess your current car and discuss a trade-in towards a Pilgrim purchase. Send us its make, model, year, mileage, photographs and available history, along with details of the car you are interested in. Trade-ins are not automatic: each proposal is considered individually, based on condition, documentation and market demand.
Possible structures include equal-value exchanges and trades with a cash adjustment on either side, agreed transparently in advance.
The Pilgrim Sumo makes the look and open-air character of a 427 Cobra accessible to many more drivers than the original cars could. It has been in production since 1985, and Pilgrim still builds, restores and services cars at its Sussex workshop. Its use of widely available Ford running gear keeps many mechanical parts easy to source. Individual cars stand out through build quality, specification, documentation and condition, and a well-sorted car can be very rewarding to drive.
It depends on how you plan to use the car. A Pilgrim Cobra is a light, open two-seater with little weather protection, so it suits dry-weather touring, events and track days. A V6 car is lighter and simpler, while a V8 car delivers the sound and performance most buyers associate with the Cobra shape. Uprated brakes, cooling and suspension make regular use easier. PTTM also offers restorations and custom builds. Tell your sales advisor how and how often you plan to drive, so we can recommend suitable cars.
Yes. Our Personalized Car Search service can look beyond our current inventory. Tell us your preferred version, engine and gearbox, whether factory-built or kit-built, registration needs, and colour, condition and budget.
We identify suitable cars and help assess their condition, history and build quality. Factory-built cars, well-documented V8 cars, low-mileage examples and cars already registered in Europe can take longer to find, and we will give you an honest expectation of timing. Search terms are agreed before we begin, and you are never obliged to proceed with a car we present.
Yes. PTTM works with buyers across Europe and overseas and can coordinate transport to your country. Within Europe, cars travel by road with our own trailers or trusted partners. Intercontinental deliveries normally go by sea freight, and air freight is available on request. We confirm the transport method, insurance, costs and estimated timing for your destination before you commit. Import requirements vary by country, so share your destination when enquiring and we can explain the options.
We’re happy to discuss your plans and advise on the right next steps. Whether you’re considering a purchase, planning a restoration or build, or exploring options for selling or registration.
