Step into the world of the Shelby Series 1, for sale at Pedal to the Metal. Unveiled at the 1997 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Series 1 was Carroll Shelby’s modern reinterpretation of the Cobra roadster, built in the Las Vegas area on an extruded aluminium chassis with carbon fibre and fibreglass body panels. It used a 4.0-litre Oldsmobile Aurora V8 of about 320 hp with a six-speed ZF transaxle, and a supercharged option raised output to as much as 450 hp. Only 249 production cars were built, all as 1999 models, followed by a small number of later component cars.
If your ideal Shelby isn’t in our current inventory, we can help you find it. PTTM sources high-quality classic and collector cars, with worldwide delivery available.
Choose by specification and completeness. The 249 production cars are all 1999 models with the Aurora V8 and six-speed ZF transaxle, and some were fitted with the supercharger option or the X50 package. Most have the folding soft top, while some were delivered without a top.
Cars built after the 1999 safety certification expired were supplied as component cars without an engine or gearbox, with a seven-digit VIN and a CSX5000-series serial number, so their drivetrain depends on who completed them. A new Series II has also been announced for 2024.
The standard Oldsmobile Aurora V8 was upgraded by Shelby to about 320 hp and 290 lb-ft. The supercharger option raised output to as much as 450 hp, and combined with the X50 package it reached just over 540 hp, a combination fitted to only 11 cars. Brake upgrades with two-piston and four-piston calipers were also offered. Because General Motors supplied the engine and many parts, ask how a car has been maintained and whether specialist knowledge of the drivetrain is available.
Start with identity and specification. Check the VIN and Shelby documentation, and confirm whether the car is one of the 249 production cars or a later component car, and which options it carries. Then inspect the aluminium chassis, the composite body panels and their fit, the soft top and its mechanism, the clutch and transaxle, and the brakes and tyres. On low-mileage cars, check for ageing seals, fluids and tyres.
On restomod and pro-touring cars, judge the quality of the components and workmanship. PTTM can share the information available on a car and discuss any further inspection.
Specification, mileage and condition set the starting point. A production car with the supercharger, especially combined with the X50 package, sits in a different market from a standard car or a component car completed later. Within any car, value reflects mileage, documentation, factory options, the condition of the body and soft top, and colour.
Unrestored survivors, restored cars and professionally built restomods are each valued on different terms. Compare the whole car and its records alongside the price, and PTTM can help you define a realistic search.
Registration or title documents with a VIN matching the car are the foundation. For a Series 1, the original sales documents, option records and Shelby documentation confirm the specification, while service records show how the car and its drivetrain have been maintained. For a component car, the records of who completed it and which engine and gearbox were fitted matter most. Imported cars should carry their import papers, and PTTM’s Registration Service can guide European registration.
Yes, PTTM can assess your current car and discuss a trade-in towards a Shelby purchase. Send us its make, model, year, mileage, photographs and available history, along with details of the car you are interested in. Trade-ins are not automatic: each proposal is considered individually, based on condition, documentation and market demand.
Possible structures include equal-value exchanges and trades with a cash adjustment on either side, agreed transparently in advance.
The Series 1 is Carroll Shelby’s own interpretation of a modern Cobra, developed under his name rather than built on an existing production car. A run of 500 was announced, but only 249 were completed, all as 1999 models. Motor Trend recorded 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds for a naturally aspirated car. Its design links directly to the original Shelby Cobra. Individual cars stand out through specification, documentation, mileage and condition, and a well-sorted driver can be as rewarding as a concours car.
It depends on how you plan to use the car. The Series 1 is an open two-seater with a folding soft top, near 50/50 weight distribution and a six-speed manual transaxle, so it suits fast road driving and track days. A standard car is the simpler choice to run, while a supercharged car delivers considerably more performance. PTTM also offers restorations and custom builds. Tell your sales advisor how and how often you plan to drive, so we can recommend suitable cars.
Yes. Our Personalized Car Search service can look beyond our current inventory. Tell us whether you want a production car or a component car, your preferred options, and colour, mileage, condition and budget.
We identify suitable cars and help assess their condition, history and authenticity. With only 249 production cars built, supercharged cars, cars with the X50 package and low-mileage examples can take longer to find, and we will give you an honest expectation of timing. Search terms are agreed before we begin, and you are never obliged to proceed with a car we present.
Yes. PTTM works with buyers across Europe and overseas and can coordinate transport to your country. Within Europe, cars travel by road with our own trailers or trusted partners. Intercontinental deliveries normally go by sea freight, and air freight is available on request. We confirm the transport method, insurance, costs and estimated timing for your destination before you commit. Import requirements vary by country, so share your destination when enquiring and we can explain the options.
We’re happy to discuss your plans and advise on the right next steps. Whether you’re considering a purchase, planning a restoration or build, or exploring options for selling or registration.
