Restorations of classic American Muscle Cars

At PTTM, we specialize in full restorations of classic American muscle cars, with a clear focus on returning each vehicle to its original factory specification.

Restoration, in its truest form, is not about modern upgrades or personal reinterpretation. It is about accuracy, respect for original engineering and preserving what made these cars iconic. For us, restoration means bringing a car back to what it once was mechanically, visually and historically.

We work with owners and buyers worldwide who value originality, craftsmanship and transparency throughout the restoration process.

What We Mean by Restoration

At PTTM, restoration means returning a classic American muscle car to the way it left the factory. This includes:

  • Factory-correct drivetrains, components and finishes

  • Period-correct materials, colors and interior details

  • Mechanical systems restored to original function and specification

  • Respect for original engineering and production methods

Restoration is fundamentally different from Restomod or Pro Touring builds. Where those approaches introduce modern technology or performance upgrades, restoration focuses entirely on historical accuracy and authenticity.

Every decision is guided by one question: Is this how the car was meant to be?

Is Restoration Right for You?

Restoration is the right choice for owners and buyers who value originality over modern interpretation. It is typically suited for:

  • Owners who want to preserve a car’s original character

  • Collectors who value factory-correct specifications and provenance

  • Enthusiasts restoring a car with historical or emotional significance

  • Buyers seeking an honest, unmodified classic

If your goal is improved performance, modern drivability or contemporary comfort, a Restomod or Pro Touring approach (under the Custom Builds tab) may be a better fit. We are always upfront about which direction best suits your car and your goals.

Our Approach to Restoration

Every restoration project starts with understanding the car and the owner’s objective. No two cars and no two owners are the same.

Our process typically includes:

Assessment & Documentation
A detailed inspection to document the car’s condition, originality and technical state. This forms the basis of a realistic and transparent restoration plan.

Disassembly & Inspection
Careful disassembly to evaluate every component including structural integrity, mechanical wear and any previous work.

Body, Drivetrain & Interior Restoration
From bodywork and paint to engine, transmission, suspension and interior. All work is carried out with factory-correct precision. Original parts are restored wherever possible. Correct replacements are sourced when necessary.

Assembly, Testing & Finishing
Once reassembled, the vehicle is thoroughly tested and refined. Fit, finish and mechanical performance are verified before delivery.

Not sure whether restoration is the right path? We’re happy to discuss your options before any work begins.

  • Partnering with trusted specialists when additional expertise is required

  • Working with realistic timelines that prioritize quality over speed

Every project is approached with the same care and accountability, regardless of scope.

Restoration, Restomod or Pro Touring?

There are different ways to bring a classic American muscle car back to life:

  • Restoration: Preserves originality and factory-correct execution

  • Restomod: Blends original design with discreet modern upgrades

  • Pro Touring: Reimagines the car with performance, handling, and braking as priorities

PTTM offers all three approaches and helps clients choose the direction that best fits their car, expectations and intended use.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

A proper restoration is one of the most significant investments you can make in a classic muscle car. Done correctly, it transforms a tired or deteriorated car into something that can be shown, driven, and valued for decades. Done poorly, it destroys originality, masks problems, and costs more to undo than it would have cost to do right the first time. At Pedal to the Metal, we have been restoring classic American muscle cars for over 20 years at our facility in Sneek, Netherlands, working with specialists in bodywork, paint, chrome, engine rebuilding, interior, and drivetrain. This guide explains how our restoration process works and what you need to know before you commit to a project.

We handle the full range, from a light refresh that addresses specific areas of concern to a complete concours-level restoration that returns the car to factory specification in every detail. We are experts in all major American muscle car marques including Shelby, Ford, GM, Chrysler (Mopar), and AMC. Whatever your goal – originality for judged shows, concours correctness, or a reliable high-quality driver – we will plan the project around that outcome. We do not have a one-size-fits-all approach because no two restoration projects are the same.

The process runs in nine stages.

It starts with a conversation about what you want. You share photos, details, and documentation of your car and tell us your vision – whether that is originality, show quality, or reliable drivability. We then arrange a meeting with our restoration manager and CEO to discuss every detail of the project, covering bodywork, chassis, engine, drivetrain, interior, and parts sourcing. Together we build a clear plan of action including scope of work and a timeline. Because of the many unknowns inherent in complex restorations, budgets are presented as honest estimates rather than fixed promises. Projects are billed monthly with full transparency. Once agreed, we sign off and begin.

The car is then carefully disassembled and every component is inspected to uncover any hidden issues and confirm the exact scope of work required. You are updated throughout this stage so there are no surprises. Restoration work then begins, covering bodywork, paint, chrome, engine rebuild, drivetrain, and interior as required by the plan. We keep you closely involved with regular photos, progress reports, and scheduled meetings in person or online. As the restoration nears completion, our team carries out final assembly, tuning, and testing of every component, from engine performance to paint finish and interior detail. Nothing leaves our workshop without passing strict quality checks. The finished car is then revealed – often with a celebratory handover at our facility – or delivered directly to your door, ready to drive and enjoy.

Yes. For collectors who require numbers-matching authenticity, we plan the restoration specifically around preserving and presenting the original drivetrain components correctly. This includes proper documentation of the engine stamp codes, correct refinishing of original components, and sourcing of correct-specification parts where replacements are needed. If you are restoring a car for investment purposes or for judged concours competition, tell us that from the start so we can plan accordingly.

Yes. We work with international clients and handle the import logistics for cars being brought to our facility for restoration. If you have a barn find, a project car, or a partially restored car in the United States that you want finished by specialists in Europe, contact us to discuss the logistics. We have experience managing cross-border shipments and can advise on the most efficient approach.

It depends entirely on the scope of the project. A focused restoration addressing specific areas – a full paint job, an engine rebuild, or an interior restoration – might take a few months. A full ground-up concours restoration on a major muscle car typically takes longer, and we will give you a realistic timeline estimate after the initial disassembly and inspection stage, when the true scope of work is fully known. We will never give you an optimistic timeline just to win the work and then revise it repeatedly. Our interest is in building a long-term relationship with every client, not in overpromising.

Restoration costs vary enormously depending on the car, its current condition, the level of finish required, and the parts needed. A targeted refresh might start from €15,000 to €25,000 ($16,500 to $27,500). A full concours restoration on a major muscle car will run into six-figure amounts or more depending on the platform and the specification. We will provide you with an honest estimate after reviewing your car and discussing your goals. Because restorations frequently uncover additional work once disassembly is underway, all budgets are presented as estimates and projects are billed monthly with full transparency. We will never proceed with additional work without discussing it with you first.

We combine traditional restoration methods with modern precision. Our team includes specialists in bodywork, paint, chrome work, engine rebuilding, interior, and mechanical systems, all working under one roof at our Sneek facility. We work on these cars every day, which means our knowledge of correct specifications, original parts, and period-correct finishes is current and deep. We also document every stage of the build with photographs and progress reports, which protects the provenance of the finished car and gives you a complete record of the work that adds tangible value when it comes to selling or insuring the car.

Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] with photos, details, and any documentation you have for your car, along with a description of what you are hoping to achieve. We will review your submission and come back to you to arrange a meeting with our restoration manager and CEO. You can also call us at +31 6 25 19 61 76 or visit our showroom in Sneek – Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 and Saturday from 09:00 to 14:00, or by appointment Monday through Thursday.
