We are proud to present this numbers matching 1970 Shelby GT350 convertible, offered for sale through our consignment program on behalf of its owner.
Only 57 GT350 convertibles were built for 1970, and this is the only one in the world finished in Royal Maroon over a white interior with a white power convertible top. In fact, only two Royal Maroon convertibles were ever built across the entire 1969/1970 Shelby program, one GT350 and one GT500, making this car a genuine one of one.
The 1969/1970 Shelby GT models were a complete departure from the earlier Mustang-based Shelbys, with a redesigned front end, fiberglass hood and trunk lid, functional hood and side scoops, and a distinctive center-exit dual exhaust unlike anything else on the road at the time. The 1970 model carries its own piece of Shelby history: due to slow 1969 sales, rising insurance costs, and the looming fuel crisis, Shelby re-VIN'd a number of unsold 1969 cars as 1970 models, adding hood stripes, a front spoiler, and a handful of other detail changes. It is a well documented and unusual chapter in Shelby's story, and it makes these late-production cars some of the rarest in the lineup.
This particular car is powered by the 351ci V8 paired with the FMX automatic transmission, delivering factory-rated 295 hp, widely believed to have been understated on paper due to insurance restrictions of the era, with real output closer to 375-400 hp. Combined with a lighter driveline than the big block GT500, the GT350 is regarded by many enthusiasts as the better-handling and more usable of the two, especially in convertible form.
Ownership and restoration history
The car left the factory in Dearborn and was originally sold through Tonkin Ford in Oregon. Company records trace four owners in total. The car spent the majority of its life in the sunny climate of the western United States, which helped preserve its original body, floors, and structure. Its most recent owner prior to PTTM, Michael Niehoff, acquired the car around 2000 and carried out a complete rotisserie restoration, finished around 2017/2018, before selling it to PTTM in 2018 through a personal relationship. PTTM subsequently went through the car in full and serviced the engine and transmission at the end of 2019.
Before restoration the car showed approximately 63,000 miles; today it shows around 68,800, meaning it has covered only about 5,000 miles since the restoration was completed. The restoration was carried out to a very high, Concours-oriented standard: excellent body, floors, and chassis, laser-straight panels, and a correctly detailed underside with the black coating specific to Dearborn-built cars. The original hood, trunk lid, and front fenders are all still fitted to the car, which is unusual for a Shelby of this age and adds real value to its authenticity.
Authenticity
This is a true numbers matching car, verified front to back. It carries its original VIN tag on the dash, the correct stamped VIN on the inner front fender, on the transmission, and on the engine block, with engine and transmission casting and date codes that match the car's build data. It is listed in the official Shelby Registry, and comes with a deluxe Marti Report, a copy of the original dealer invoice and order form, the original owner's manual, an independent appraisal report, and a full set of restoration photographs and invoices.
Factory options
This car is offered through PTTM's consignment program on behalf of its owner. It is sold with Dutch registration and license plates including a valid APK, a copy of the US title, and EU import duties paid.
