Description

1963.5 Ford Galaxie 500 4-Speed R-Code

1963½ Ford Galaxie 500 R-Code
427 Side Oiler • 4-Speed Manual • Genuine R-Code Car
History
The 1963½ Ford Galaxie 500 R-Code is one of the most important early muscle cars ever built. Produced during a short transitional period in the 1963 model year, the so-called “1963½” cars were created specifically to dominate NASCAR, drag racing, and high-performance street use.
At the heart of this Galaxie is Ford’s legendary 427 cubic inch (7.0L) FE V8, ordered under the R-Code designation — the most extreme factory performance option available at the time. With factory-rated output of approximately 425 horsepower, this engine placed the Galaxie at the absolute top of the American performance hierarchy in the early 1960s.
The 427 FE platform later became the foundation for Ford’s greatest racing successes, including the GT40 program and high-performance Cobras, cementing its place in motorsport history.
The Car
This is a very fast and very cool Galaxie — a true early muscle car built before the official muscle car era exploded. Long before the GT40 won Le Mans and before Shelby became a household name, cars like this Galaxie were already dominating the streets, drag strips, and racetracks.
The combination of a 427 Side Oiler and a 4-speed manual transmission makes this car an absolute experience to drive. It looks fully period-correct and vintage, yet still feels fresh, mechanical, and alive in a way only big-cube FE-powered Fords can.
The Galaxie R-Code and Lightweight variants were hugely successful in competition, and this car carries that same aggressive DNA — raw, mechanical, and unapologetically powerful.
Engine & Drivetrain
  • Genuine 427 Side Oiler
  • Completely rebuilt engine
  • Hydraulic roller camshaft with roller rockers
    → Increased durability
    → Faster throttle response
    → Reduced valvetrain maintenance
  • 4-speed manual transmission
Thanks to the hydraulic roller setup, the engine responds instantly to throttle input. Even a light touch on the gas wakes the car up immediately, making it very direct and engaging to drive.
The engine is currently in its break-in period. For the first 500 km, careful driving is advised. After that, the car can be used exactly as intended — hard, fast, and loud.
Condition & Presentation
  • Original red exterior
  • Original red and white interior
  • Honest, uniform patina throughout
  • Underside coated and painted in black, showing age consistent with the rest of the car
  • Interior shows wear, but remains complete and authentic
  • All gauges function correctly, including the tachometer
This Galaxie has not been over-restored. The patina is real, honest, and suits the car perfectly. It has been refreshed cosmetically (2-step polish), but we deliberately chose to preserve its authentic paint and thus, character.
Summary
A real R-Code Galaxie with a freshly rebuilt 427 Side Oiler, manual transmission, authentic patina, and massive historical relevance. This is not a polished trailer queen — it’s a serious early muscle car for someone who understands what these cars represent.
If you want something raw, rare, and mechanically honest — this is it.
