We are proud to offer an extraordinary piece of automotive history—a 1969 Shelby GT500, finished in the iconic "Competition Orange." This car is not just any Shelby; it was ordered by Shelby Racing and used as a company car for the legendary Carroll Shelby himself. This GT500 represents the pinnacle of American muscle car design and performance, coupled with an unparalleled pedigree.

The car’s history

This Shelby (model #3162) is one of 1,536 Shelby GT500 fastback coupes produced for the 1969 model year and was delivered finished in “Competition Orange”, which was not officially available for that year. #3162 was shipped new to Shelby Ford of South Lake Tahoe, California on 30th July 1969 for use as a Shelby Automotive company car by Carroll Shelby himself, and was invoiced to Shelby Racing Co of Torrance, CA. Three subsequent owners are listed in the Shelby Registry, one in the USA and two in the UK. The car is of course documented in the Shelby American World Registry.

Restoration 

This GT500 has been the subject of a two-year “last nut and bolt” full restoration carried out by Dragon Wheels Restorations (Alex Faulkner-Stevens) to return it to original “as delivered new to the complete new factory specification”. The rebuild involved complete disassembly to a bare body shell, structural repairs using original factory assembly methods, correct repaint in Competition Orange with full shell detailing, engine black out and under-body collar.

Every mechanical component has been rebuilt to the correct factory-specification to total concours standards with full detailing of every nut, bolt and washer used - just how it should be done! The engine is the 428 cui Cobra Jet V8, which has been rebuilt, balanced, blueprinted and up-rated by Knight Racing Services (Peter Knight) to produce 400bhp, while the C6 automatic transmission has likewise been rebuilt and up-rated to handle the increased power and torque. The 9” rear axle incorporates a 3.00:1 ratio Traction-Loc limited-slip differential and forged 31-spline driveshaft’s.

This car is 1 of 48 total "Competition Orange" units built, out of which only a handful were equipped with the optional AC. Therefore, after validating it through the Elite Marti Report, this car will be 1 of 1 built, making it absolutely unique as you go further trough the option list. The "Competition Orange" paint is a fresh, mid-69 paint option that made it only to a few of the Shelby's.

Last, but not least, the glovebox features Carroll Shelby's autograph, which only makes this Shelby more desirable and valuable.

The car has reached our facility, where it will be completed to the highest standards.
